The Youth PEACEPORT Program provides an active and tangible way for young kids and mid-level students to connect with the meaning of a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence as they connect with each other. As students complete required tasks for a stimulating variety of activities and programs, they become “Peace Ambassadors” in those specific areas.
A unique feature of the PEACEPORT Program is the opportunity for kids to demonstrate their commitment to compassion by reaching out to another group of kids through the “Spirit of Exchange” Program. Communities who would like to participate in the PEACEPORT Program but do not have the funds can apply for PEACEPORT Scholarships. Groups already participating in the program can then choose a group to sponsor from amongst the applicants and raise the necessary funds to support their program. The group receiving the PEACEPORTs gift then offers something from their own home, creating a true exchange and a meaningful connection.
For example, a youth group in Kenya that wants to participate in the PEACEPORT Program applies for a PEACEPORT Scholarship. Meanwhile, a 7th grade class in Atlanta signs on to the Spirit of Exchange Program and receives the list of those groups who have applied for Scholarships. They choose to partner with the group in Kenya and work to fundraise the cost of the PEACEPORT Program. In return for their PEACEPORTs, the Kenyan children send native artwork back to the class in Atlanta. Through this simple exchange, these kids are bonded in the spirit of compassion and community.
These two groups have now formed a PEACEPORT Partnership, and can foster a relationship by writing letters or emails, sending pictures, signing each other’s PEACEPORTS, etc. With each PEACEPORT Partnership, we grow the web of connection that will unite these kids under the banner of a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence.
